TPU Elastic Non-Woven for Waterproof Clothing: Rain Gear and Outdoor Apparel

How TPU elastic non-woven membranes enable waterproof, breathable outdoor and rainwear

Waterproof clothing needs to block rain while letting sweat escape. TPU elastic non-woven for waterproof clothing is used as the waterproof/breathable membrane in high-performance rain gear and outdoor apparel.

Here's how TPU membranes perform in apparel applications.

Waterproof/Breathable Membrane Requirements

A membrane for waterproof clothing must balance:

  • Waterproofness: 10,000-30,000 mm hydrostatic head (depends on activity)
  • Breathability (MVTR): 8,000-20,000 g/m²/24h (higher for high-exertion activities)
  • Flexibility: Must move with the wearer — no cracking or delamination
  • Durability: Withstand washing, abrasion, and UV exposure

TPU vs. ePTFE (Gore-Tex®) Membranes

Property ePTFE (Gore-Tex type) TPU Elastic Non-Woven
Waterproofness Excellent (30,000+ mm) Very good (10,000-30,000 mm)
Breathability Excellent Very good
Flexibility Good Excellent (elastic)
Cost High Lower
Oil resistance Poor (pores can clog) Good

TPU doesn't match ePTFE's extreme performance, but it covers 90% of use cases at a much lower price point.

Garment Construction with TPU Membrane

3-layer construction: Outer fabric + TPU membrane + inner lining — all laminated together. Most durable, used for serious outdoor gear.

2.5-layer construction: Outer fabric + TPU membrane + printed protective layer (no separate lining). Lighter weight, used for ultralight rain shells.

2-layer construction: Outer fabric + TPU membrane, with a separate lining. Less expensive, used for urban rainwear.

DWR (Durable Water Repellent) note: The outer fabric needs DWR treatment to prevent "wetting out" — when the outer fabric gets saturated, breathability drops even if the TPU membrane is fine. TPU membranes perform best when the face fabric stays dry.

Applications

  • Hiking/backpacking rainwear: Jackets and pants needing 15,000+ mm waterproofness and 10,000+ MVTR
  • Ski/snowboard gear: Needs higher MVTR due to high exertion; TPUelasticity is a plus for movement
  • Urban/commuter rainwear: Lower performance requirements; TPU offers a cost-effective solution
  • Golf/tennis outerwear: Stretch is important — TPU's elasticity is a diferentiator vs. PTFE
