TPU Elastic Non-Woven for Industrial Filtration: Chemical Resistance and Durability

How TPU elastic non-woven performs in industrial filtration — chemical compatibility, temperature range, and mechanical durability

Industrial filtration operates in harsh environments — acidic gases, alkaline solutions, high temperatures, abrasive particulates. TPU elastic non-woven for industrial filtration is used in bag filters, cartridge filters, and membrane supports where standard polymers fail.

Here's how TPU performs in demanding filtration applications.

Chemical Resistance of TPU

TPU's chemical resistance depends on its hard segment chemistry (ester vs. ether vs. speciality formulations):

Chemical Class Ester-based TPU Ether-based TPU
Aliphatic hydrocarbons Good Good
Aromatic hydrocarbons Poor to Fair Fair
Alcohols Good Excellent
Dilute acids Good Good
Strong acids Poor Poor
Alkaline solutions Fair Fair to Good
Oils and greases Excellent Excellent
Water (room temp) Excellent Excellent

For aggressive chemical environments, speciality TPU formulations (aliphatic, polycarbonate-based) offer enhanced resistance.

Temperature Range for Filtration Applications

  • Continuous service: 80-120°C depending on formulation
  • Peak temperature: Up to 150°C for short durations
  • Low temperature: Remains flexible down to -40°C (ether-based)

For high-temperature filtration (above 150°C), consider PTFE or fiberglass — TPU has limits.

TPU Non-Woven as Filter Media or Support

As primary filter media: TPU non-woven can be engineered with specific pore sizes (1-100 microns) for coarse to medium filtration. The elasticity allows the filter to withstand pulse-jet cleaning without tearing.

As support layer: In composite filter structures, TPU non-woven provides dimensional stability and pleat support for fragile membrane layers (PTFE, PVDF).

As scrim reinforcement: TPU scrim (grid-like structure) reinforces geotextiles and heavy-duty filter bags, adding tear strength without sacrificing flexibility.

Application example: A chemical processing plant replaced Nomex® filter bags with TPU-laminated aramid bags. The TPU layer provided chemical resistance against acidic flue gases, extending bag life by 40%. Not a universal solution, but a good fit for specific corrosive environments.

Filtration Efficiency and Permeability

Key metrics for filtration non-wovens:

  • Filtration efficiency: 60-99.9% depending on pore size and layer configuration
  • Air permeability: 50-500 L/m²/s (adjustable via TPU formulation and processing)
  • Pressure drop: Lower than rigid membranes; TPU non-woven can be designed for low resistance
