Modified Wood OEM Custom Sizes — Custom Thickness, Profiles, and Dimensions for B2B Buyers
Custom profiling process, MOQ for custom runs, tooling costs, and lead times for made-to-order modified timber components
"Standard size" is a myth in modified wood. Every project, every product line, and every market has different dimensional requirements. A European window manufacturer needs profiles that are ±0.3mm from their drawing. An American decking distributor wants 28mm thick boards instead of the standard 21mm. A furniture brand needs a proprietary rail profile that nobody else stocks.
At Chambroad, OEM/custom work represents a significant portion of our production volume. We're set up for it — with flexible tooling, short first-article turnaround, and engineering support that helps you get the profile right before committing to production quantities.
The bottom line on custom sizes: If you can provide a drawing (even a sketch), we can probably make it. The questions are about MOQ, tooling cost, and lead time — not whether we can do it technically.
Types of Customization We Handle
| Custom Type |
Example Request |
Typical Tooling Cost |
| New profile shape (custom cross-section) |
Proprietary window sash profile from your DXF |
$200–600 per cutter set |
| Non-standard thickness |
25mm thick decking instead of standard 21mm |
$0 (if within existing planer range) / $150–300 if new cutters needed |
| Non-standard width |
160mm wide cladding board instead of 140mm |
Usually no extra cost if raw material allows |
| Custom length cuts |
All pieces cut to 2440mm exact (no random length) |
No tooling cost; small labor surcharge ~$0.02/m |
| Pre-drilling to pattern |
Fastener holes pre-drilled at specified positions |
$0.03–0.06/hole (CNC drilling setup) |

The Custom OEM Process — Step by Step
- You send us: Profile drawing (.DXF/.DWG/PDF with dimensions), target annual volume, material spec (species, treatment type), finish requirement, delivery location.
- We review & quote: Feasibility assessment, unit price at target volume, tooling cost (if any), lead time breakdown, sample availability. Response within 48 hours max.
- First-article samples: We produce 3–10 sample pieces (depending on complexity) and ship them to you. You test-fit, measure, evaluate. This typically takes 10–20 days after deposit.
- Adjustments (if needed): You send feedback ("groove needs to be 2mm deeper," "radius should be R3 not R5"). We adjust the tooling/program and re-send samples. One round of adjustment is usually included in the initial quote; additional rounds may incur minor charges.
- Approval & production: You sign off on the final sample. Production begins. QC data provided with each shipment against approved sample dimensions.
- Repeat orders: On reorders, we produce from the same approved tooling/program. No new sampling needed unless you change the spec.
MOQ for Custom Orders — What's Realistic?
- New custom profile (new cutter set): MOQ 500–1,000 pcs or 15–25 m³ minimum run. Tooling amortized over this quantity.
- Modified standard profile (existing tooling): Standard MOQ applies (200–500 pcs depending on product). No extra tooling cost.
- Non-standard thickness only (standard profile shape): Usually no MOQ premium if thickness is within our equipment range. Confirm with quotation.
- First-article trial order (below MOQ): We accept trial orders at small-batch pricing (typically +8–15% above base rate). Lets you test quality without full commitment.
Lead Time Breakdown for Custom OEM Orders
Understanding where time goes helps you plan your project timeline:
Phase 1: Quotation & Review
2–5 days
Drawing review, feasibility check, pricing, lead time estimate
Phase 2: Tooling (if needed)
7–14 days
Cutter manufacturing, installation, test cutting, adjustment
Phase 3: First-Article Samples
10–20 days
Raw material prep → modification → profiling → finishing → QC → shipping
Phase 4: Volume Production
15–35 days
After approval; depends on order size and production schedule
The Bottom Line on Custom Sizes
Don't let "we only stock standard sizes" limit your design options. Most of our best long-term clients started with a custom request — a unique profile dimension that became their competitive advantage in their market. The upfront investment in tooling and sampling pays back quickly when you're offering something your competitors can't source off-the-shelf.
At Chambroad, we've produced custom profiles for window manufacturers, marine contractors, sports equipment brands, and furniture companies across four continents. Send us your drawing and let's see what we can build together.
