Price ranges, cost drivers, and how to evaluate quotes from Chinese suppliers
If you're sourcing engineered wood flooring or panels from China, you've probably received quotes that vary by 30% or more for what looks like the same product. Here's what's actually driving those numbers — and how to tell whether a low price is a good deal or a quality risk.
These are indicative ranges for container-sized orders. Your actual price will depend on specifications, volume, and market conditions. Use this as a starting point for evaluating quotes.
| Product Type | Price Range (USD/m²) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Entry-level engineered flooring 2mm wear layer, HDF core |
$8 – $14 | Budget segment; limited refinishing potential |
| Mid-range engineered flooring 3–4mm wear layer, plywood core |
$15 – $25 | Most common for residential projects |
| Premium engineered flooring 4–6mm wear layer, birch plywood core |
$26 – $45 | Multiple refinishing cycles; wide plank options |
| Exterior cladding / decking Modified wood, fire-rated |
$35 – $65 | Depends on modification process and fire rating |
| Structural LVL / beams | $40 – $80 / linear meter | Depends on dimensions and grade |
These are ex-China prices (FOB). Add ocean freight, import duties, and local delivery to get landed cost. For US imports, anti-dumping duties may apply depending on the supplier and product origin. Always confirm the final landed cost before committing to volume orders.
Two quotes at $18/m² might deliver very different products. Here's what you're actually paying for:
This is the single biggest cost driver. Moving from 2mm to 4mm wear layer can increase the price by 30–50%. But it also extends the product lifespan and allows refinishing — which matters for the premium segment.
HDF cores are cheaper but less moisture-stable than birch plywood. For residential flooring, plywood cores command a 15–25% premium. For structural applications, the difference is larger.
Oak dominates the market and is competitively priced. Walnut, teak, and some exotic species can double or triple the veneer cost. Grade matters too — clear grade (fewer knots) costs more than rustic grade.
Aluminum oxide finishes, hand-scraped textures, wire-brushed surfaces, and UV-cured oils all add cost. Modified wood (acetylated or heat-treated) carries a significant price premium over standard engineered wood.
CARB Phase 2, FSC, CE marking — certification adds 5–15% to the cost depending on the scope. But without them, you can't sell into the US, EU, or sustainability-focused projects.
A detailed quote should break down the price. If you receive a single line item with no specification details, that's a problem. Here's what to look for:
Wear layer thickness, core material, veneer species and grade, finish type, dimensions, packing method. If these aren't specified, you're not comparing products — you're comparing numbers.
Ask for a sample before negotiating price. A $12/m² floor and a $16/m² floor might look similar in photos. They won't feel the same underfoot, and they won't perform the same after two years.
Check what's included. Does the price include palletizing? Moisture barrier packaging? Documentation for customs? These "small" items add up when you're shipping containers.
| Order Size | Typical Discount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 container (20ft) | Base price | Standard MOQ for most manufacturers |
| 2–5 containers | 3–8% discount | Depends on production scheduling |
| 6+ containers | 8–15% discount | Negotiable; may require annual volume commitment |
| Annual contract (50+ containers) | 15–25% discount | Requires forecast sharing and sometimes exclusivity |
We don't compete on being the cheapest. Here's what our pricing includes that budget suppliers often skip:
Included testing. Every batch is tested for moisture content and dimensional accuracy. That testing cost is in our price — and it saves you from receiving containers of out-of-spec product.
Proper packaging. Modified wood and exterior products need moisture-barrier packaging for ocean transport. It's included in our quoted price. Some suppliers quote low then add "optional" packaging later.
Documentation support. CARB Phase 2 test reports, CE documentation, packing lists formatted for your customs broker — we handle this as part of the order, not as a paid extra.
Consistent specification. The price we quote is for the specification we sample. We don't swap materials to protect margin when timber prices move. If raw material costs change significantly, we'll discuss it with you before adjusting specifications.
If the quote just says "oak engineered flooring" without specifying wear layer, you don't have enough information to compare.
HDF and plywood look similar in a finished floor. They perform very differently in high-humidity environments.
E1 is the Chinese standard minimum. For export to North America or Europe, you need CARB Phase 2 or equivalent. If the supplier can't provide test reports, that's your answer about the price — they're not complying.
Ocean transport damages unprepared wood products. Moisture-barrier film, desiccant, and proper palletizing should be included. Ask specifically — then check if the price includes it.
