How TPU elastic non-woven backsheets improve comfort and reduce skin irritation in sanitary napkins
Sanitary napkins have three key layers: the top sheet (next to skin), the absorbent core, and the backsheet (outer layer). TPU elastic non-woven for sanitary napkin backsheets is a premium alternative to traditional PE film.
Here's why brands are switching to TPU backsheets.
Polyethylene (PE) film backsheets have been the industry standard for decades. They work — they block fluid leakage. But they have drawbacks:
| Feature | PE Film | Breathable PE | TPU Elastic Non-Woven |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fluid barrier | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Breathability (MVTR) | None | Medium | High |
| Handfeel | Plastic-like | Better | Textile-like |
| Elasticity | None | None | Yes |
| Noise | Audible | Less | Quiet |
Performance target: Premium sanitary napkin backsheets target MVTR of 10,000+ g/m²/24h while maintaining hydrostatic resistance of 10,000+ mm. TPU elastic non-woven can achieve both — unlike PE films which force a tradeoff.
Laminate structure: TPU film (5-20 μm) is laminated to a non-woven substrate (PP or PET, 15-30 g/m²). The non-woven provides strength and a textile-like feel; the TPU film provides the fluid barrier.
Breathability mechanism: Microporous TPU or hydrophilic TPU allows water vapor transmission while blocking liquid water. The MVTR can be tuned for the target market (higher MVTR for premium products).
Elasticity: The TPU component adds stretch, allowing the napkin to conform to body movement without bunching or gap formation.
