Sustainable forestry certification goes beyond chain-of-custody (which tracks the product) — it certifies the forest management itself. When you buy timber material with forest management certification, you're verifying that the forest the timber came from is managed for long-term productivity, biodiversity, and community rights.

FSC Forest Management vs. Chain-of-Custody
- Forest Management (FM): Certifies the forest itself — harvesting rates, worker safety, indigenous rights, and ecological impact. This is the "sustainable" in sustainable forestry.
- Chain-of-Custody (CoC): Tracks certified timber from the certified forest to the end product. Without FM, CoC alone only confirms the timber is from a documented source — not necessarily a sustainable one.
Keep in mind: Most green building credits (LEED MR, BREEAM Mat 03) can be earned with CoC certification alone. FM certification is a stronger claim but not required for the credit.
PEFC and National Systems
PEFC works by endorsing national forest certification systems. In China, the national system is CFCC (China Forest Certification Council), which is PEFC-endorsed. Timber certified under CFCC is accepted as PEFC-certified timber in export markets.
Verification Checklist
Sustainable Forestry Verification
- Check FM certificate separately from CoC: The supplier's CoC certificate doesn't confirm FM. Ask for the forest management certificate from the harvest forest.
- Confirm species match: The FM certificate lists accepted species. Harvesting a non-listed species under that certificate invalidates the claim.
