Modified Wood Lifespan and Warranty — What's Actually Covered (And What Isn't)

Service life expectations by application, warranty terms explained, and the fine print that matters when you're buying modified wood

"25-year warranty." It looks great on a brochure. But what does it actually mean? Does it cover everything? What voids it? And — honestly — do suppliers actually honor these claims when things go wrong? At Chambroad, we believe in clear warranty language over impressive numbers on paper. Here's how our modified wood products are warranted, what's covered, and what you should look out for when comparing warranties across suppliers.

The most important thing to understand: No modified wood warranty covers "everything forever." Every warranty has exclusions, conditions, and limitations. The supplier who claims otherwise is either lying or doesn't understand their own policy. Read the fine print before you buy.

Service Life Expectations vs. Warranty Period

These are two different things. Service life is how long the product lasts under normal use. Warranty period is how long the supplier stands behind it financially. Here's how they line up:

Application Expected Service Life Chambroad Warranty What's Covered
Residential decking 20–25 years 10 years (residential) Structural failure, abnormal decay, excessive warping >3mm/m
Commercial decking / boardwalks 18–22 years 5 years (commercial) Same as residential + abrasion resistance claim
Cladding / facade panels 20–25 years 10 years Dimensional stability, surface delamination, decay
Window/door profiles 25+ years 10 years Dimensional movement beyond spec, manufacturing defects
Marine / LNG support wood 20–30 years Project-specific (typically 5–10) Cryogenic performance, mechanical properties at rated temperature
Flame-retardant panels (Class B) 15–20 years 10 years Fire rating performance retention, structural integrity

Common Warranty Exclusions — The Fine Print That Matters

Standard Exclusions Across Most Modified Wood Warranties

  • Surface weathering / color change: Natural graying or UV fading is not considered a defect. All timber weathers.
  • Improper installation: Wrong fastener type, insufficient ventilation, incorrect joist spacing, no expansion gaps — all void warranty.
  • Mechanical damage: Impact from heavy objects, dragging furniture, vehicle traffic beyond design rating.
  • Standing water contact: Prolonged submersion or soil contact without proper drainage detail.
  • Coating/failure of third-party finishes: If you apply a coating that fails, that's between you and your paint supplier.

How to Make a Valid Warranty Claim

  1. Document the issue with photos and measurements. "My deck warped" isn't enough. We need photos showing which boards, where, and measurement of the actual deflection/warping.
  2. Provide purchase documentation. Invoice number, order date, quantity purchased, and delivery destination.
  3. Confirm installation was per our guidelines. Photos of substructure, fasteners used, joint spacing, and drainage setup help us verify compliance.
  4. Submit within the warranty period. Claims received after the warranty expiration date cannot be processed (obviously). But we often review borderline cases on goodwill basis if the relationship is long-standing.

Extending Service Life — Practical Maintenance Tips

Modified wood is durable, but it's not immortal. Here's what extends service life beyond the baseline:

Annual Cleaning

Mild soap solution + soft brush. Removes dirt buildup that traps moisture against the surface. Takes 30 minutes for a typical deck. Do this once a year minimum.

Mid-Life Re-coating

Around year 10–12, apply a fresh coat of UV-stable oil or stain. This restores surface appearance and adds another 8–12 years of protection.

Check Fasteners Annually

Walk the deck once a year with a screwdriver. Tighten any loose fasteners. Replace any corroded ones immediately. A $0.50 screw prevents a $200 board replacement.

Keep Debris Out of Joints

Leaves, pine needles, and dirt trapped between boards hold moisture against edges. Clear joints seasonally. A leaf blower takes 5 minutes.

The Bottom Line on Lifespan & Warranty

A warranty is only as good as the company behind it. A 25-year warranty from a supplier who might not be around in five years is worth less than a 10-year warranty from an established manufacturer who honors claims promptly. When evaluating suppliers, ask for references from customers who have actually made warranty claims, not just satisfied first-time buyers.

At Chambroad, our full warranty terms are included in every supply agreement. We don't hide them in a PDF buried on a website. You'll know exactly what's covered, what's excluded, and how to make a claim before you pay the deposit.
