Modified Wood PEFC Certified Supplier — Chain of Custody, Sourcing, and Specification Guide

PEFC certification explained for modified wood products, how it differs from FSC, and when to specify PEFC for your project

If you're working on a project in Europe — particularly public procurement, EU-funded construction, or any project with an environmental policy requiring certified timber — PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) may be the certification your spec sheet calls for. At Chambroad, we hold PEFC Chain of Custody certification and can supply PEFC-certified modified wood across our full product range. Here's what that actually means in practice.

Quick distinction: PEFC endorses national forest certification systems rather than running its own global standard like FSC. Both are credible; the right choice depends on which one your project specifies, and which one is more readily available from your supplier's sourcing region.

PEFC vs. FSC — How to Choose

Choose PEFC When...

  • Your project is in Europe (especially UK, Germany, France, Spain)
  • Public sector / government procurement rules specify "certified timber" without naming a specific scheme
  • You want slightly lower administrative cost than FSC
  • BREEAM Mat credit is your target green building rating

Choose FSC When...

  • Your spec explicitly names FSC as required certification
  • LEED v4/v4.1 MR credit is the target rating
  • North American or global brand consistency is important
  • FSC 100% (all-certified) is specifically required

How PEFC Chain of Custody Works for Modified Wood

The process mirrors the FSC CoC system but uses PEFC-endorsed national schemes at each stage:

  1. Forest source: Timber comes from forests certified under a PEFC-recognized national scheme (e.g., China Forest Certification Council CFCC, PEFC Canada, ATFS Australia).
  2. Processing & modification: Each company in the chain holds its own PEFC CoC certificate. Our modification facility is PEFC CoC certified — so the thermal/chemical modification step maintains the certified chain.
  3. Final product: The finished modified wood product carries the PEFC label with our license code. Documentation (CoC invoices, transfer declarations) accompanies every shipment.
  4. Your receipt: As the buyer, you receive PEFC documentation proving the product's certified status through the entire supply chain.

PEFC Claim Types Available from Chambroad

Claim Type Availability Price Premium
PEFC Mix (standard) ✓ Standard availability +3–6%
PEFC 100% ✓ On request (MOQ applies) +6–10%
PEFC Controlled (non-certified) ✓ Default option No premium (baseline price)

Green Building Credits — PEFC Contribution

PEFC-certified modified wood contributes to sustainability credits in major rating systems:

  • BREEAM (UK/Europe): Mat 01 (responsible sourcing) — 1–3 points depending on % of PEFC/FSC content in total timber use
  • DGNB (Germany): ENV1.2 / BIO1.3 — recognizes PEFC as valid evidence of responsible forestry
  • HQE (France): Éco-matériaux category — accepts PEFC/FSC equally
  • LEED: Accepts both but gives slight preference to FSC in MRc3/MRc4 wording. PEFC still earns points.

Ordering PEFC-Certified Products — What You Need to Know

If your project requires PEFC certification:

  1. Specify PEFC in your initial inquiry. Tell us whether you need PEFC Mix or PEFC 100%. This affects our lumber sourcing plan.
  2. Allow extra lead time. PEFC orders typically need +7–14 days for us to arrange certified raw material sourcing and complete the documentation package.
  3. Check volume requirements. Some PEFC lumber sources have minimum batch sizes that translate into higher MOQs for the final product.
  4. Request the documentation package upfront. We provide it automatically with every PEFC order, but seeing it before ordering confirms we understand your compliance needs correctly.

The Bottom Line on PEFC Certification

PEFC is not "FSC lite." It's a different system with different governance, and in many European contexts, it's actually the preferred or default choice. If your specification says "certified timber" without specifying which system, PEFC will satisfy most auditors and procurement officers — often at a lower cost premium than FSC.

At Chambroad, we hold both FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody certifications and can supply either (or both, if your client can't decide). Send us your project's certification requirement and we'll confirm availability and pricing within 24 hours.
