A practical guide to selecting timber decking — covering species choice, modification benefits, installation details, and maintenance reality
Outdoor decking is where timber material either performs beautifully for 20 years or starts to show problems in year 3. The difference comes down to specifying the right product and installing it correctly.
We manufacture biomass-modified timber decking products, including marine-grade decking for high-exposure sites. Here's what to check before you specify.
| Material | Expected Service Life | Maintenance Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Untreated softwood | 5–8 years | Annual cleaning + bi-annual coating |
| Treated softwood (ACQ/CA) | 10–15 years | Annual cleaning + coating every 2–3 years |
| Modified timber (our product) | 15–25 years | Annual cleaning; coating optional for grey patina look |
Keep in mind: Modified timber greys out on the surface when left uncoated — similar to cedar or untreated oak. This is cosmetic only and doesn't indicate decay. If colour retention matters, a UV-stable coating is recommended with a 5–7 year refurbishment cycle.
Decking surface texture affects slip resistance and visual character. Our marine-grade decking is available in smooth, brushed, and anti-slip grooved profiles depending on application.
